FLEMING PAPERS. LVII. 10 Oct. 1924-20 Jan.1932.
ff. ii + 93. 277 x 218mm. Front and back hard, black covers of a ring binder, spine is missing. It was advertised as a ‘scholastic notebook’.
A section of the spine with the label survives, it has ‘Immunisation in Vitro’ written on it.
Notebook contains the discovery of penicillin.
This notebook has been divided into four sections. The notebook seems to have originally housed plain paper and this has been supplemented with other pieces of plain and lined paper. As there is no spine it is unclear whether notes are in the right order or whether they have been altered at a later date.
Notebook includes:
Section one:
ff. 1-2. Two photographs of Fleming’s report card for his medical training
Section two: 13-23 Oct. 1924.
ff. 3-5. Immunisation in vitro
i) Experiments with fresh and incubated leucocytes
ii) Experiment with de-leucocyted blood and leucocytes
iii) Experiment with faeces filtrate
Section Two: 12 May-15 Nov. 1926.
ff. 6-9. [Bacteria/ bactericidal] slide

ff. 10-14. Worms (penicillin)
i) Experiment with different bugs in slide cells
ii) Diagram of the growth of staphylococcus in cells
iii) Experiment examining the rate of emigration of leucocytes from worms
Section four: 30 Oct. 1928.
ff. 15-16. Discovery of Penicillin
Description of a staphylococcus inhibiting mould, including diagrams
