Label on the front has ‘PENICILLIN 9th October, 1945’ written on it.
Label inside the back cover for ‘W. Isacke, Printer, Stationer, Account Book Maker. 133, Praed Street, W.2.’
Most of the work in this notebook is focused on penicillin, with experiments based on samples taken from individuals. Fleming has noted the name of the person, where the samples were taken from on the body and a description of the bacterium’s growth. The notebook also houses notes on other experiments that are linked with penicillin.
Notebook includes:
Section one: ff. 1-6.
i) Two copies (photograph/ photocopy) of a list of staphylococci from normal skin, etc
ii) Two copies (photograph/ photocopy) of a list of staphylococci from definite lesions
iii) Two copies (photograph/ photocopy) of the summaries of the above tables
Section two: Penicillin lozenges
1. f. 17. Parke Davis and Company and Boots and Co, notes include a description of tests of their potency; 28 Nov. 1945.
2. f. 33. From supply of 21 Dec. 1945, kept in ice chest and at room temperature, each tablet 500 units then diluted by 1/10 to 50 units, testing for potency and found that they are full strength; 20 March 1946.
3. f. 33v. From supply of November, two tablets from ten different bottles, crushed and dissolved in 100cc of saline, found that they lost 50% of their potency; 22 March 1946.
Section three: 23 March 1946.
f. 34. Inhalation
i) Sputum – diluted 1/10 in saline and placed in bath 60˚C for 20 minutes and titrated
ii) 10 units per cc
iii) 3-3½ units per cc
