QUEEN ELIZABETH'S PRAYER BOOK, with six Prayers composed by Her Majesty . . . and written by herself in English, French, Latin, Greek, and Italian. It contains two portrait miniatures by Nicholas Hilliard, viz., that of the Queen's suitor, the Duke of Alençon (Duke of Anjou, 1576), at the beginning, and that of the Queen herself at the end. Autotype reproduction on vellum, same size as the MS., which is 3 in. x 2 in. and consists of 74 pages, including six blank and two containing the miniatures. The printed preface of six pages, signed J. W., gives the date as circ. 1570. The original MS. was exhibited by Mr. J. W. Whitehead at the " Fine Art Society " in 1902. It was at one time in the possession of Horace Walpole (see his Anecdotes of Painting, 1888, i, p. 174). See also G. C. Williamson, Hist. of Portrait Miniatures, 1904, i, p. 16. One of forty copies printed. 1893.
