-
Origin: England.
Provenance:
John Skynner of Essex, late 16th century: given by him to Holton: inscriptions recording the gift: 'Holtoni ex dono domini Johannis Skynner' (ff. ixv, 1r)
Edward Stillingfleet (b. 1635, d.1699), bishop of Worcester and theologian: possibly identifiable as his MS. 163, 'MSS. in Old English physicall. MS. in pergameno', in the catalogue of his manuscripts drawn in 1685 (now Harley MS 7644). Bought with other manuscripts from the Stillingfleet library in 1707 from his son, Edward Stillingfleet (d. 1708), physician and Church of England clergyman, by Robert Harley.
The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (b. 1661, d. 1724), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (b. 1689, d. 1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts. Listed but not valued by Harley's librarian Humfrey Wanley (1672-1726) in Harley MS 7055, f. 77r, no. 163, and described by him in 1710-11 in the third volume of his 'Catalogus Brevior', (Add. 45703, f. 230r).
Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta, née Cavendish Holles (b. 1694, d. 1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (b. 1715, d. 1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 (a fraction of their contemporary value) under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts form one of the foundation collections of the British Library.
