Illustrated prayer book, in various languages, dated 1578 and presented to Queen Elizabeth I for New Year. Written in inks of various colours, with illuminated titles and initials.
Possibly presented by William Absolon (Lawson, ‘This Remembrance of the New Year’, p. 143). Previously also associated with Petruccio Ubaldini (see Rigg, Ricci).
f. 1r: Ornamental title-page, with the royal arms, the date 1578, and the inscription ‘Deus tueatur Reginam Elizabeth’.
ff. 2r-3v: Short poem in Latin elegiacs, titled ‘De illustrissima Regina Angliæ certamen Deorum, Foeminam eam an Virum nasci vellent, an neutrum, an utrumque’.
ff. 4r-95r: Collection of prayers, in Greek, Latin, French, Italian, Spanish, German, Dutch, and Hebrew. In inks of various colours, with illumination and decoration. Dated 1578.
