SECRET ARTICLE between Louis XIV. of France and the Protector, Oliver Cromwell, for the expulsion of Charles II. and others, Royalists, from France and of certain Frenchmen from England within forty days; [3 Nov. 1655]. Latin. On three single sheets of vellum fastened together with yellow silk. On f. 1 is the article itself, signed by [Anthoine] de Bordeaux, French Ambassador in England. On f. 2 are the names of the eleven Frenchmen to be expelled from England, with the signature of De Bordeaux. On f. 3 are the names of the twenty Englishmen to be expelled from France, the first three being " Charles, oldest sonne of Charles, late King of England, James, Duke of Yorke, Henry, Duke of Glocester, after tenn yeares if required," with the signatures of the English Commissioners, Nathaniel Fiennes, P[hilip Sydney, Viscount] Lisle [Earl of Leicester, 1677], and Walter Strickland. The article is printed by J. Du Mont, Corps Universel Diplomatique, 1728, vol. vi. pt. ii. p. 123. Vellum; ff. 3. A note on the back by Thomas Astle states that the document was given to him by Dr. [Charles] Lyttelton, Bishop of Carlisle [1762-1768]. There is a copy in Add. 4162, f. 71, in the hand of W- Milbourne, of Armathwaite Castle, Cumberland, who adds that the original was then, 8 Mar. 1756, in his possession. Quarto.
