A letter of James II (r. 1685-1688), King of England, Scotland, and Ireland to the Grand Vizier Azem, announcing the recall of James Brydges (b. 1642, d. 1714), 8th Baron Chandos, as English Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire, and the appointment of Sir William Soame (b. c. 1645, d. 1686), 1st Baronet, to succeed him; Windsor, 30 September 1685.
Sir William Soame later died at Malta on his voyage out to take up the position, and James Brydges continued at Constantinople until his recall to England in 1688 (see the letter-book of James Brydges, now Stowe MSS 219-220).

Decoration:
Illuminated by Gideon Royer, employed by the Secretary of State as 'Embellisher of letters to Eastern Princes' (c. 1669-1704).
Large decorated initials in gold, with cadels in black ink, and a three-sided foliate border in colours and gold, including the Royal arms of James II.
Endorsement in gold and black ink, framed in red.
