ENROLMENT-BOOK Of the Mayor and Bailiffs of Winchester, containing enrolments of charters, deeds, wills and other documents entered in various years from 31 Edw. I. to 42 Eliz. [1303- 1600]. There are entries for almost every year down to 7 Hen. VI., after which the next enrolment was in 31 Hen. VI., and the next after that in 4 Hen. VII. At the end the entries are less orderly than in the earlier periods; the last date of enrolment given is Michaelmas, 8 Eliz. [1566], at f. 192 b, but after this come several deeds of later date, the latest of them (f. 197) being of 3 June, 42 Eliz. [1600]. Lat. and Engl. Included also are;-(a) List of the sovereigns of England "qui possiderunt totum regnum," from Alfred the Great; originally ending with Henry VI., but continued by later hands to Elizabeth. f. 1;-(b) List of the Mayors and Bailiffs from 1485 to 1603. ff. 2, 3 b-4 b;-(c) Copy of an indenture (having probably been omitted in its proper place) concerning merchants trading at Winchester, dated Winchester "ad Burghmotum," Tuesd. aft. F. of St. George [23 Apr.], 8 Hen. VI. [1430]. f. 2 b;-(d) Oath of the Mayor, to be taken "coram xxiiiior senioribus de ciuitate," viz. "ye schal obserue and kepe alle the Statutes and vsages of thys cite, and alle Ordynauncez ymad of oure predessessours by fore thys tyme. And ye schal no man discharge for Offys ne non Officer ne ministre make newe ne chaunge be thoute the sent of the xxiiii. and of the Comunus. Bute wel and trewelyche alle the Statutes and vsages ye schal putte in exeucion, and by youre power lawfullyche hem excute. So God helpe you at the holy dom. Et respondet, 'ye so God helpe me at the holy dom'. Ita flat." Written opposite the enrolments for 36 Edw. III. [1362], but apparently inserted later. f. 53 b. The first twelve pages, and part of the thirteenth, of the enrolment-book (ff. 5-11) have been printed by Sir Thomas Phillipps (at Evesham, 1857). Vellum; ff. 202. Bound in boards covered with (modern) purple morocco. A short account of the MS., written by Sheffield Grace in 1826, has been inserted at f. 3; whence it appears that the volume formerly belonged to Edmund Abbot, of Winterbourne Dantsey, co. Wilts., after whose death (in 1761) it descended to his grandson, the Rev. Edmund Benson, Priest-vicar of Salisbury Cathedral. On the margin of f. 1 is written "Robert Benson, Close, Salisbury," possibly the autograph of the Recorder of Salisbury (ob. 1844), son of the above Edmund. Folio.
