King Æthelwulf of the West Saxons and of the men of Kent grants land at Horton (near Canterbury), Kent, to Eadred; dated 874 for 839 × 844, perhaps 844 (Sawyer, no. 319).
With additional material about the subsequent descent of the estate, and a notice of the purchase of a portion of the land by Leofric.
Endorsed in a 12th-century hand, ‘eðeluulfus rex dedit horatun \hortune./ [added in a 13th-century hand] edredo’ and ‘.latine.’

‘GRANT by Æðelulf, King of the West-Saxons and Cantuuarii, to Edred [afterwards Archbishop of Canterbury] of land at Horatune [Horton, co. Kent], near [Canterbury and] Certeham [Chartham, co. Kent], with permission to give it to Lulla and Sigeðryð, who in turn may give it to Eaulf and Herewine: of this property Eaulf gave a moiety to Biarnulf,and retained the other. Witn.:Æðelulf, king; Cealnoð, archbishop [of Canterbury, 833-870]; Æðelstan, king; Æðelbald, the king's son.
