King Eadmund grants 12 hides (mansae), equivalent to 12 sulungs, at Ealdingtune in Thanet (i.e. Monkton), Kent, to Ælfstan, minister; dated 944, with English bounds (Sawyer, no. 497).
Endorsed by the scribe of the charter, ‘+ Þis is þara tƿelf sulunga boc æt ealdingtune \on tenyt/ [added by a later hand] þe eadmund cing gebocode ælfstane his þegne on ece yrfe.’; in a 12th-century hand, ‘Oda archiepiscopus’; in another 12th-century hand, ‘.latine.’; and in a 14th-century hand, ‘Edmundus rex dedit aldintune Elfstano famulo suo.’
