Confirmation by Hugh (b. 1147, d. 1181), 5th Earl of Chester, of his mother Countess Matilda’s grant to Repton Priory of ten librates of land in Gransden [Huntingdonshire], for the soul of his father, Ranulf, earl of Chester, himself, and all his ancestors.
Endorsed: in an 18th-century hand, ‘In temp. W. Conq. / circa anno 1068 / Hugh Lupus first earl of Chester dyed anno 1130. / Gransden in Com. Huntingdon’; in a 15th-century hand, ‘de terra de Gransdene’.
Affixed with an imperfect seal of Hugh, earl of Chester, oval, brown, with the earl mounted and armoured and carrying a lance with a square flag and long streamers and a shield, with the legend, ‘sigillum h[ug]onis comitis cestrie’. Two impressions of a small counterseal, oval, with an intaglio gem, a gryllus of two human faces (see Birch, Catalogue of Seals (1887-1900), II, pp. 264-65).
