Grant by Matilda (d. 1189), countess of Chester, with the consent of her son, Hugh, earl of Chester, to Repton Priory [Derbyshire], of all her land in Gransden, for the love of God, the souls of King Henry and his heirs, his mother the empress [Empress Matilda] her friend, the countess’s father Robert, earl of Gloucester, her mother Countess Mabel, her husband Earl Ranulf [de Gernons (1099-1153), earl of Chester], herself, her son, and all her ancestors and successors. The charter must date to between 1172, when the priory moved from Calke to Repton, and 1189, when Matilda died.
Endorsed: in a 13th-century hand, ‘De t[er]ra grauncend / bona'; in an 18th-century hand, ‘Gransden in Com. Huntingdon’.
Affixed with a very imperfect seal of Matilda, countess of Chester, lozenge, brown, with a full-length figure of Matilda in a long dress (see Birch, Catalogue of Seals (1887-1900), II, p. 380).
