A grant of confraternity by Sir Thomas Norton (fl. 1505-1526), knight and master of the Hospital of Burton Lazars of the Order of St Lazarus of Jerusalem, to Elizabeth Vachell; 1512. The text lists the spiritual benefits of membership. The document was mass produced, with blank spaces left for the recipient’s name.
Endorsed: in an early 16th century hand, ‘Burton Lazars.’; in a late 16th century hand, ‘Norton, miles, magister hospitalis de Burton Lazars, in Anglia'; in an 18th-century hand, ‘Co: Leciester / 3. H:8./A[nn]o 1512 / Burton Lazars Hospital. Tho[mas] Norton miles master / Indulgence for Eliza[beth] Wachell.’
Affixed with the imperfect seal of the Hospital of Burton Lazars, a lozenge, showing St Lazarus, full-length, with a mitre in his right hand.
