NOTARIAL INSTRUMENT of Thomas Godsalve, clerk, notary public of the see of York, setting forth that on 17 March, 1494, in a room at the Antelope in Briggestrete, Lichfield, there appeared Humphrey Stanley, knt., and Nicholas Agarde, esq., who declared that they, with John Ferrers, knt., of Wichnor, and Thomas Wellez, of Horecrosse, were present, about the feast of the Nat. of St. John the Baptist [24 June], 20 Edw. IV. [1480], in the hall of the manor of William Hastings, Dom. de Hastings, chamberlain to Edward IV. at Asshby [Ashby-de-la-Zouch, co. Leic.], when John Cokayn, sen., of Ashboume, co. Derb., Esq., granted to his sons John and Richard certain messuages and closes in Calton, co. Staff and in Balidon [Ballidon], co. Derby, and that, subsequently, about the Feast of St. Margaret [20 July] in the same year, in the hall of the dwelling house of William Pensby at Burton on Trent [co. Staff.], the said John Cokayne acknowledged the said grants, as recited viz.: (a) Grant from John Cokayn to John his son of all his lordship of Calton, with a messuage in Balidon and two closes called Alport Closes in the lordship of Herthill [Harthill, co. Derb.], dat. at Ashbourne, on the Feast of St. Stephen [26 Dec.], 20 Edw. IV. [1480];-(b) Grant from the same to Richard his son of all his lordship of Balidon, with the same date. Witn. to the notarial instrument: James Keyley, John Langton, John Langham, Sampson Pury, all of the see of Coventry and Lichfield. Dat.
