Vol. 1. 'OLLANTAY'; the most celebrated of Quechua dramas. A copy made by Markham (see note at f. 15b) in April 1853 from a MS. in the possession of Dr Pablo Justiniani, Cura of Laris, who claimed descent from the Incas (see The Incas of Peru, pp. 146 sqq.). The Quechua text was printed from this MS. by Markham, with a literal line for line English translation, in 1871 under the title Ollanta. An ancient Ynca drama. A revised English translation, with notes on the drama and surviving MSS., appears as Appendix D to The Incas of Peru, pp. 323-407. For discussion of Markham's text see the editions of the drama by G. Pacheco Zegarra, Ollantaï (Collection linguistique américaine, iv; Trésor de la langue des Incas, i), Paris, 1878, pp. cxv-cxix; E. W. Middendorf, Ollanta (Die einheimischen Sprachen Perus, iii), Leipzig, 1890, pp. 114-116; see also E. C. Hills, 'The Quechua drama, Ollanta', The Romanic Review, v, no. 2, 1914, pp. 127-176, and J. Lara, La poesía quechua, Mexico, 1947, pp. 94- 107. Paper; ff. 16. Quarto. A. D. 1853. Written in two cols. to the page, cols. numbered 1-60. Stage directions in English. The drama ends on f. 15b. At f. 16 is a twenty-eight line poem, in Spanish, headed 'Protestacion en laberinto, que sele atribuye a Jacobo VIII Rey de Inglaterra, Escocia, &c.' [Prince James Francis Edward Stuart, the 'Old Pretender'], beg. 'Aborresco de todo corazon', ends 'Muy de veras creo'. At f. 16b is a sketch of the arms attributed to the Incas.
