'PICTOR IN CARMINE'; a collection of types and antitypes for use by artists, in Latin, written in England in the early 13th cent., comprising a preface (ff. 1-1b), a table of 138 New Testament antitypes to which are assigned varying numbers of Old Testament types (ff. 2-10b), and a series of hexameter couplets explaining the types and intended to be inscribed beside them (ff. 11-74b). Marginal notes of biblical quotations or explanatory observations occur throughout the MS. in a very slightly later band. A leaf is missing after f. 74 and the last four lines of the main text are lacking. The treatise has been attributed to Adam, Abbot circ. 1200 of the Cistercian Abbey of Dore, co. Heref. For details of this attribution and of the twelve other known copies of this text see M. R. James, 'Pictor in Carmine', Archaeologia, xciv, 1951, pp. 141-166, a copy of which is included in Add. MS. 48353 B. See also T. J. Brown, 'Pictor in Carmine', Brit. Mus. Quart., xix, 1954, pp. 73-75. The preface has been printed by Sir Thomas Phillipps, Catalogue, 1837, p. 182; by L. Delisle, Mélanges de Paléographie et de Bibliographie, 1880, p. 206; and by M. R. James, op. cit. At ff. 75-75b a hand of circ. 1300 has added a collection of proverbs in Latin verse (144 lines), many of which have been printed in H. Walther, Proverbia Sententiaeque Latinitatis Medii Aevi (Carmina Medii Aevi Posterioris Latina, II), 6 vols., 1963-1969, beg: 'Hic locus est flendi. locus est peccata luendi'.
