MILITARY PLANS. Vol. I. Twenty plans of military dispositions in the Austrian Netherlands, the Dutch Republic and Germany; 1747-1748. Eighteen plans show encampments of the Allied armies, but two on ff. 17 and 19 show French encampments. A plan on f. 4 is attributed to Hugh Debbieg, another on f. 16 to Ha: Gordon, and seventeen to one Benjamin Biss. See Y. Hodson, 'Prince William, map collector', Map collector, xliv (Autumn 1988), pp. 2-12, and E. Charteris, William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland; his early life and times, 1721-1748, 1913, pp. 299-322. For further details on the military organization of the campaign, including biographical notes on Debbieg, see W. Porter, History of the Corps of Royal Engineers, 1899, pp. 162-6, 394-7. It is unclear how the volume was compiled, but it may possibly have strayed from the papers of Cumberland's headquarters during the campaign. Some evidence for this can be seen by comparison of the map of Westmal in the Cumberland collection in the Royal Library at Windsor, now Cumberland collection 10.099, with the map of Westmal on f. 3. The cartouches on the maps are sufficiently similar to have been taken from the same exemplar, and the handling of the conventional symbols for the army positions and the labelling of these positions and other features are very similar.
ff. iv+20. Ink, watercolours and pencil on paper. Size of sheets, maximum 370 x 680mm. Sewn in marbled boards labelled on front cover, 'Encampments in 1747 - no. 16'. Binding 350 x 510mm.
