C. Plans and sketches of military encampments in Germany and the Netherlands; 1693-1757. Some of the maps are accompanied by sketches, which may be drafts. Most of the more finished maps have the encampments superimposed in watercolours on the basic framework of roads and bold natural features, probably copied or traced from printed base maps such as those by G. Fricx. See C. Lemoine-Isabeau, Les militaires et la cartographie des Pays-Bas meridionaux et de la principauté de Liège à la fin du XVIIe et au XVIIIe siècle, 1984, pp. 83, 86-94, and Y. Hodson, 'The military influence on the official mapping of Great Britain in the eighteenth century', IMCOS Journal, xxvii, Jan. 1987. In these maps there is no attempt to supply details of towns, but terrain – marsh, woodland and high ground – is indicated by the conventional symbols. This suggests that the maps were intended for military purposes, and the presence of possible drafts alongside the finished maps suggests that they were drawn up during the course of the campaign, in Cumberland's headquarters, by staff attached to the Quartermaster-General, whose responsibilities covered encampments. Plans on ff. 1, 7-9, 17 have been pricked for copying, or to be copied from. One on f. 12 has been marked off in squares. A plan of the French lines at Casteren on f. 13, heavily cropped, appears to be by the same hand as a rough plan of the Oudenbosch area on f. 16, attributed to William Eyres. ff. 19. Maximum size 385 x 500mm.
