MILLAR BEQUEST. Vol. IV. Book of Judges, etc., glossed, written in England, perhaps at Reading Abbey; late 12th cent. Latin. Judges, Ruth, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes and Song of Songs, with the Glossa Ordinaria, additional commentary and contemporary interlinear glosses. The text is imperfect, lacking four quires and five single folios, including the first part of every book. See: Turner, op. cit., BMQ, xxxiii, pp. 19-20, where the Reading Abbey origin is suggested; Migne, PL, civ, Glossa Ordinaria, 63-426; C. F. R. de Hamel, Glossed Books of the Bible and the origins of the Paris Booktrade (1984). Owned possibly by Reading Abbey. The following marginal occurs in a late 16th cent. hand (f. 26v): 'the books of machabies are not canonicall'. Purchased by Millar from J. & J. Leighton, 2 March 1916, Cat. item 32. Millar's bookplate, f. ii. Spine, torn printed label with figure '6. . .', 19th cent. (f. i).
Vellum; ii+109. 295 x 210mm. Gatherings: i8(lacks 1), ii-iii6, iv-xv8(iv lacks 1, vii lacks 8, ix lacks 3, xii lacks 1, all with loss of text). Originally a manuscript with at least 19 quires, marked with roman numerals at foot of last folio verso. Original quires i, iii, vii and xix are missing. Catchwords to most quires where appropriate from f. 7v. Ruled straight across page. Normally centre column with two side columns. Two English gothic book-hands: A. ff. 1-19, 21v line 4 - f. 24;- B. ff. 20-21v line 3, f. 27 to end. Commentaries in gothic glossing scripts: scribe B may have written his own gloss. Red and green initials, etc., at various points in the text. Original contemporary binding, oak boards covered with deerskin, nails for strap attachment on front cover and hole for pin on back cover. 295 x 210mm. Figures in ink (17th cent.) and pencil memoranda in a 19th cent. hand, in English, inside front cover. Small areas of deliberate mutilation, ff. 26, 42.
