MILLAR BEQUEST. Vol. V. Glossed Pentateuch, written in England; mid 13th cent. Latin. Minor loss of text after the final folio. Genesis - Leviticus (ff. 1-258v) bear numerous contemporary marginal notes and corrections in a single cursive hand, and later medieval notes in pencil. At the end of most quires throughout Genesis and Exodus the word 'Correctum' is written in the hand of the scribe who wrote the main text (eg. f. 66v). Numbers and Deuteronomy are uncorrected and bear few later marginals. Turner, op. cit., BMQ, xxxiii, pp. 20-21, pl. VII. Owned by the house of Franciscan Friars at Lincoln, whose library mark appears, top right hand corner, f. 1. The name 'Wyllam Barnade' occurs in a late 15th - early 16th cent. hand, f. 36, see also f. 41. Extensive marginal notes in Latin relating to the text in a 16th cent. hand, f. 6v. Notes of a secular nature in English, 16th cent., ff. 106, 252v. Purchased by Charles Harry St John Hornby from Maggs, May 1917, Hornby MS. 40. Hornby, whose bookplate occurs, f. ii, was responsible for rebinding the MS. Purchased by Millar from the executors of Hornby, Aug. 1946. Millar's bookplate, f. iii.
Vellum; ff. iii+395. 430 x 275mm. Gatherings (41) generally of 10, i-ii8, xx6(lacks 6), xli6(lacks 5 and 6, with minor loss of text). Catchwords regular to most quires from f. 8v. 'Correctum' to most quires, foot of last folio verso, through ff. 36-186. Ruled straight across. One English gothic book-hand throughout, commentaries in gothic glossing script by the same scribe. Contemporary corrections and notes in a cursive script, possibly by the same writer. Initials and penwork in red and blue: large decorated initials in red and blue penwork at the beginning of Books, etc., ff. 1, 2v, 97, 190v, 259, 260, 345v, 355.
