MILLAR BEQUEST. Vol. VII. St Raymundus de Peñaforte, 'Summa de Poenitentia et Matrimonio', written in England; late 13th cent. Latin. The text, in four books, is similar to that first printed, with gloss by Guillelmus Redonensis, under the title Summa Sti Raymundi de Peniafort . . . de Poenitentia, et Matrimonio . . ., Rome (1603); facsimile edition, Farnborough (1967). After Stuart's death on 7 July 1874, the MS. was sold in Stuart's sale, Sotheby's, 17 June 1875, lot 112, to Stark, bookseller, of King William Street, Strand. While in Stark's possession the MS. was seen by the editor of Stotevyle's booklist, see art. 2 below. Later owned by the Rev. Nathaniel Castleton Stephen Poyntz, vicar of Dorchester 1886-1920, signature f. ii verso. Sale of books belonging to Poyntz, Sotheby's 30 June 1921, lot 626. Purchased by Dobell, who sold the MS. to Millar on 8 July 1921. Millar's bookplate, f. i.
Vellum; ff. v+167. 190 x 130mm. Gatherings: end-paper and fly-leaves ff. 1-4, i-viii16, ix-x12, xi irregular, end-paper, f. 167. Inserts bearing corrections, ff. 91, 96, 154. Catchwords regular from ff. 20v-146v. Single columns. Two English gothic book-hands: A. ff. 5-52v;- B. ff. 53-158v. Numerous marginal notes and corrections, late 13th-early 14th cent. The leaves have, in many cases, been cropped back to the prickings, but where marginals extend beyond the cutting line they are frequently trimmed around to preserve the text and folded over. Red and blue capitals, headings, etc., initials in red and blue penwork. Modern binding by C. & C. McLeish. Original back fly-leaf (f. 167) fragmentary and badly damaged by insects and damp, final folios water stained.
