Vulgate
- Scope & Content:
-
This manuscript contains both the Old and New Testament books of the Vulgate. The manuscript probably originates from Northern France. The style of its decoration is associated by Robert Branner (Manuscript Painting, 1977) with the Johannes Grusch Atelier: a group of Parisian artists active from 1240 until about 1270. It is first known to be owned by the Carthusian monastery of Bonnefoy, the diocese of Viviers, in 1443.

The British Library Catalogue of Additions to the Manuscripts, New Series, 1966-1970 (London: The British Library, 1998), I (Descriptions), pp. 84-85: 'MILLAR BEQUEST. Vol. IX. Bible, written and illuminated in northern France, probably Paris; second half of the 13th cent. Latin. Turner, op. cit., BMQ, xxxiii, pp. 24-25, pl. X. The books of the Bible are in the following order: Prologue (Jerome's prefaces, 'Frater Ambrosius . . .' and 'Desiderii mei . . .', other prologues precede the books), Octateuch, Kings 1-4, Chronicles 1-2, 1-2 Esdras, Tobit, Judith, Esther, Job, Psalms, Sapiential Books, Prophets, Maccabees, Gospels, Pauline Epistles, Acts, Catholic Epistles, Revelation. This corresponds to S. Berger, Histoire de la Vulgate (1893), p. 335, no. 96. The manuscript also includes the 'Interpretation of Hebrew Names', usually attributed to Bede, ff. 577-620. The manuscript belonged to the Carthusian monastery of Bonnefoy, diocese of Viviers, in 1443, when it was pledged by the procurator and treasurer of the house, John Vincen., to Guigo, chancellor of the diocese of Le Puy, for ten royaux d'or (inscription, f. 622). An inscription on f. 2 records ownership by Jean Pinet (d.1707), a canon of Nevers in 1670 and dean from 1694. The bookplate of Ern. de Toytot, presumably the French author Ernest de Toytot, whose works were published in Paris circa 1863-1872, occurs on f. ii. A Millar bookplate occurs on f. i. Millar purchased the manuscript of Davis and Orioli, who had just purchased it in Paris, on 30 Sept. 1925.

Ruled (for single bounding lines) in metal point for double columns of 45 lines. Text is below top line. Written space 90 x 60mm. Script is a small Gothic textualis semi-quadrata by several hands. Systematic quire signatures, now mostly lost through trimming. Modern white pigskin binding by W. H. Smith and Son.
The manuscript is decorated in a style popular for this sort of book in Paris and northern France in the later thirteenth cent. Colouring is flat and the figure style linear, with flesh rendered in white with red spots on the cheeks. In addition to seven historiated initials, there are 73 small decorated initials in gold and colours, some with zoomorphic terminals, to each major division of the text. Pen-flourished minor initials, running-titles and chapter numbers are executed in blue and red. The historiated initials are as follows:
1. f. 3. Prologue: F, with partial border. Jerome as a scribe.
