MILLAR BEQUEST. Vol. X. Peter Lombard, 'Sentences', in four books, written in Spain; mid 13th cent. Latin. Beg. (Book 1) 'ueteris ac noue legis continentiam'. Lacks the Prologue 'cupientes'. For printed editions see: Migne, PL, cxcii, 522-962; Petri Lombardi Libri IV Sententiarum, Quaracchi edition (1916), 2 vols. For other MSS. containing all or part of this text see: Add. 10960, 10961, 15748, 18320, 18321, 18899, Egerton 631, 633, Harley 233, ff. 1-69, 3241, 4880, 5270, Royal 9 B.VI-X, 10 A. XVII, 11 C.I, Yates Thompson 17. On a fly-leaf (ff. 353-353v) are memoranda of theses condemned before the Masters of Theology at Paris in? 1243, in an early 14th-cent. hand. Turner, op. cit., BMQ, xxxiii, pp. 25-26, pl. XI. The MS. was owned, circa 1300, by Francisco de Olivares, rector of Castellón de la Plana in Valencia, who paid 120 [sueldos?] of Barcelona for the book. Francisco presented the book to his nephew Brother Ignacio Serrano of Morella, through the intermediary of Guillermo de Bouach', rector of Villafranca del Cid. This information is contained in two notes of ownership (f. 354): now badly damaged by reagent, these notes were transcribed by Millar in 1915 (f. ii). The word 'garibj', possibly a code, is written in Latin and Greek with the initials 'F. C. J.' in an early 16th cent. hand (f. 353v). According to a note by Millar (f. ii), the manuscript was purchased on 3 March 1909 by Walter Withall from 'the Marquis de Castelthomond', possibly a descendent of the attainted Jacobite Earls of Thomond, who had brought it over with a miscellaneous collection from Spain. Obtained by Millar from Withall by exchange, 14 Jan. 1914. Millar's bookplate, f. i.
