MILLAR BEQUEST. Vol. XVI. Carthusian Hymnal, written in South-East Germany; early 15th cent. Latin. Liturgical use and origin are indicated by the title of the Litany, 'Letania ordinis carthusiensis maior' (f. 15v), and by its inclusion of St Achatius whose vita was a 14th-cent. invention. Achatius was particularly venerated in South-East Germany, especially in the diocese of Passau. The Throne of Our Lady at Gaming was the only Carthusian house in that diocese. See Turner, op. cit., BMQ, xxxiii, p. 32. Decorated initials in red. Pencil note, f. i, 'See McClear MS. 122'. Millar's ex libris (f. i) bears the note 'My first manuscript'; he purchased it on 6 Feb. 1911 for £1. 6s from the Polyglot Library in Charing Cross Rd.
Vellum; ff. i+33. 193 x 140mm. Sec. fol.: 'Iam lucis'. Gatherings (5) i8, ii6, iii10 (lacks 10), iv8 (lacks 7 and 8), v4.
