MILLAR BEQUEST. Vol. XX. Miniature of the Nativity, a single leaf with a miniature on the recto, produced in Italy, possibly Rome; mid 16th cent. Turner, op. cit., BMQ, xxxiii, p. 36, pl. XVI.
Vellum; single folio. 117 x 82mm.
Miniature of the Nativity with the Holy Family and shepherds in a stable, with three putti bearing an inscribed scroll above and the annunciation to the shepherds in the background. Executed in gold and colours and contained within a decorative gilded architectural border. The style is indebted to the full-scale painters of the day, notably Michelangelo. It is an accomplished piece, reminiscent of the work of Giulio Clovio (1520-1578), and may be associated with the work of his circle for the Papal Court.
