Add MS 61797

TIPPETT COLLECTION. Vol. L. Symphony no. 3. Pencil draft of the concluding section of Part I, from figure 111 in the published score, and of Part II. Mostly in full score, with some sections in compressed or short score. Written on sheets half the size of those found in Add. 61796, made by tearing those full-size sheets in half. These smaller sheets have not always been used in order, and on occasion two or more separate passages are written on the same side of one leaf. Many leaves carry sketches, etc. in addition to the principal draft. The order of the main sequence is indicated below. A photograph of the composer at work on this manuscript is reproduced in E. W. White, Tippett and his Operas (1979), between pp. 48, 49.

1. ff. 1-99. Main sequence, from one bar after fig. 111 to the end of the work. Because of the irregular use of the leaves the music runs in the order ff. 1, 2, 2v, 3, 4, 5, 3v, 6, 7, 6v, 7v, 8, 9, 8v, 9v, 10, 11, 10v, 12, 5v, 13, 14, 13, 15, 16, 12, 5v, 4v, 14v, 32v, 35v, 16v, 34v, 13v, 15v, 17, 33v, versos of 36-38, 40v, 39v, versos of 42-46, 48v, 18, 19-99. Two passages are not present in this sequence: figs. 113-115, and from 3 bars after fig. 126-fig. 128. Sketches, etc. include a sketch for the oboe phrase at fig. 113 and a variant of the passage from figs. 100-102 (f. 1v); a variant of the passage from fig. 142 to 2 bars after 143 is at f. 13, and of the passage from figs. 142-144 at f. 11.

2. ff. 110-115. Leaves in the half-sheet format not placed in the sequence above. Although not all of the passages on each leaf have been identified, all except f. 115 include material for Part I of the symphony, between figs. 17 and 98.
