FOUNTAINS ABBEY (VYNER) MSS. Vol. III. Bernardus de Gordonio, 'Lilium medicine', treatises, etc., England; early 14th cent. Latin. Bernardus de Gordonio was Rector of the University of Montpellier, circa 1285-1320. 16th cent. ex libris 'Liber sancte Marie de fontibus ex dono domini Willelmi Pecke vicarii Collegii Ripon, liberatus domino Marmaduco Abbati per manus fratris Thome Kydde monachi eiusdem anno domini mo quingentessimo xvi [1516]', f. vi verso, with an erased inscription, presumably of ownership, above. An erased ownership inscription (perhaps Johannes Ball?) occurs on f. 122v. In the collection of the Marquis of Ripon in 1876 (HMC, 5th Report, p. 294). On deposit at Leeds Archive Department as VR 6109 (inscribed, f. ii).
Vellum; ff. ix+159. Sec. fol.: 'nisi esset'. 245 x 155mm. 2 modern vellum flyleaves (ff. i-ii) to front, followed by four medieval (ff. iii-vi), and 3 medieval vellum flyleaves (ff. vii-ix), followed by 2 modern, to the back. The modern flyleaves facing the boards have been attached to them as pastedowns. Gatherings (16) of 12, except vi10 (wants 8-10, blank), viii4, xiii12 (wants 9-12, blank), xiv2, xvi12 (wants 5 and 11-12, blank; includes original rear flyleaves). Ruled (single bounding lines) in ink for double columns of 50 lines. Written space 198 x 114mm. Script is a small Gothic textualis rotunda by one principal hand. Quire signatures and 'numeration', the latter applied towards the end of the volume and in the form of a display letter, in lead-point and crayon. Horizontal catchwords. Guideletters for initials. Original binding of wooden boards covered in a white alum tawed chemise, with rough sewing in blue thread, which is sewn to the leather covering of the binding. Traces of double clasps, fastening onto lower board, with pink staining to straps. Channelling and pegging clearly visible. Leather tabs attached to foredge as bookmarkers.

5. ff. 142-159v. 'Thesaurus pauperum', ascribed to Petrus Hispanus (afterwards Pope John XXI, 1276-7). Printed by Theodoricum Martini, Antwerp, 1497, etc. See also M. Decoration consists of pen-flourished initials (2-9 lines) in blue and red, with bi-partite bodies and foliate penwork infills in red. Litterae notabiliores, paragraphus symbols and chapter numbers as running heads, all in alternating blue and red.
