1. ff. 1-47. Diary of three months' special duty on Little Andaman Island; 27 Oct. 1886-19 Jan. 1887. Portman summarised these daily entries in his subsequent report to the Chief Commissioner, and published the report itself in his History of our Relations with the Andamanese (Calcutta, 1899), Vol. II, pp. 818-825.
2. ff. 48-50, 60. Newspaper cuttings relating to Portman's linguisitic research and his photographic record of Andamanese life; 1893, n.d. The photographs, originally in eleven volumes, together with four notebooks are now held by the Museum of Mankind as the M. V. Portman Collection. A set of photographs was also prepared for the India Office, and is now held in the British Library's Asia Pacific and African Collections at shelfmark Photo 188/1-11. See also Portman's Manual of the Andamanese Languages (1887) and his Notes on the Languages of the South Andaman Group of Tribes (Calcutta, 1898).
