1. ff. 1-8. ‘Consciously’, version for orchestra. Pencil score. For vocal version see Add. 70766, ff. 13-16.
2. ff. 9-10. ‘Pakistan’, for oboe solo. Ink. On verso of bifolium (ff. 9r, 10v), pencil sketches for 3rd movement of ‘Boolavogue’ (see Add. 70756, ff. 3-48 and 70763, f. 15v), also ink lists of songs in Pete Devenport’s hand, possibly for a projected songbook.
3. ff. 11-13. Unidentified sketches, including one for a piece based on Schumann’s ‘Soldatenmarsch’ (43 Clavierstücke für die Jugend, op. 68, no. 2).
4. f. 14. Pencil sketch headed ‘Arietta’. Mostly melody only, with a few indications of harmony.
5. ff. 15-24. Music manuscript book containing Act ii Scenes 1 and 2 of a dramatic work for voices, with accompaniment for 2 pianos, clarinet, ’cello and guitar. Ink score, with pencil indications of further instruments, possibly implying an intention to orchestrate. Characters: Asia (soprano), Panthea (contralto), 3 Echoes (sopranos), Dream (tenor), 3 Spirits (basses).
6. f. 25. Untitled piece for instrumental ensemble. Pen and ink sketches.
7. ff. 26-32. Ink sketches for work for 2 pianos based on ‘The Dream of the Old Generations is Young and Fresh in the New’ by Pete Devenport, and on ‘The Keel Row’. With ink sketch showing ranges of brass instruments, possibly in preparation for composition of Brass quintet (f. 26). For further sketches for both works see Add. 70756.
8. ff. 33-36. Material produced in connection with Cardew’s visit to Montreal for the 10th anniversary of the Communist Party of Canada (Marxist-Leninist), March 1980. f. 33. Melody and words only for ‘We’re Coming to the Rally!’, song by Pete Devenport, in his hand, ink; – f. 35.
