1. ff. 1-19. Songs for ‘The Exception and the Rule’, for voices, recorders, reed organ and bass. ff. 1-11v. Autograph pencil score, apparently imperfect, with ink annotations, and ink sketches not in Cardew’s hand. The opening ‘Actor’s metrical speach [sic]’ (f. 1) is in ink and possibly in the hand of Pete Devenport, who composed the music of at least 2 numbers, ‘Song of the Tribunals’ and ‘So Ends the Story’; – ff. 12-14. 2 photocopies of ‘Song of the Tribunals’ made from earlier states of the pencil score, with pencil and ink revisions in one of the copies; – ff. 15-19. 4 photocopies of ‘So Ends the Story’ made from earlier states of the pencil score, 3 of them with ink or pencil revisions.
2. ff. 20-43. ‘The Measures Taken’, songbook (words translated by Eric Bentley) for voices and instruments. ff. 20-35v. Ink short score, with pencil draft of rhythmic backing for one of the songs, ‘Change the World’ (f. 21), pencil sketch for section M4 of ‘Sugar’ film music (f. 28v) (see Add. 70760), and pencil draft of part of 3rd movement of ‘Thälmann Sonata’ (ff. 26v, 25, 29, 30v) (see Add. 70751); – ff. 36-43. Photocopy of the preceding, with ink annotations and revisions.
