G. 'Topographical Sketch of the southern or civilised part of Trinity Parish, Essequibo', signed by 'John H. Duke, Rector'. Watermark 1833. Scale circa 1: 13860. The map itself has been drawn on a pencil grid of 10 acre squares. The title continues 'showing the site of the parish church and the distance of the several estates therefrom, also showing the situations in which it is recommended to construct two additional chapels of ease, to be used also as school-houses and estimated at 2000 dollars'. There is a table of the number of 'negro labourers' on each estate, with notes on actual and potential church attendance, in the lower left-hand corner. On the verso there is a copy of an agreement signed by five of the leading landowners to subscribe to the building of the 'Aberdeen' chapel (the site for which is marked on the map), with a note on the landowners who had not subscribed - one had declined, and the other refused on the grounds that he was in financial difficulties having been refused a Crown grant. There are numerous other notes relating to the potential cost and capacity of the new buildings.
Ink on paper. 330 x 410mm.
