H. Settlements at Berbice (New Amsterdam), British Guiana. Watermark 1832. Scale circa 1: 316800. The map is oriented with north-east at the top. It is an unusual example of a base map with overlay produced by an amateur. The base map shows the numerous small estate plots along the shore and the river bank; the overlay gives the names of the estates and their owners, and the numbers of slaves. The use of the word 'slaves' suggests that the map was produced either before or immediately after the Emancipation Act, and contrasts with Add. 70952 G, where the plantation workers are called 'negro labourers'. Churches and chapels are marked, as well as those estates which provide facilities for religious observance; planned improvements in the provision of churches and chapels are also shown.
Ink and watercolour on paper. 325 x 395mm.
