Contents:
1. ff. 1-3. Letter to Charles Herries from Spencer Perceval, concerning the appointment of the former’s son, J. C. Herries, to be his private secretary; 26 Mar. 1807.
2. ff. 4-8v. Letters to Herries from Perceval, 24 Feb. 1810, 21 Aug. 1811; the latter appointing Herries to be Commissary in Chief to the British Army; 1810, 1811.
3. ff. 9-16v. Letters to Charles Herries from Richard Cumberland, dramatist and formerly secretary to the Board of Trade; 1808-1811. With the last letter were enclosed a poem and a letter for Spencer Perceval; the letter is still in the collection, but not the poem.
4. ff. 17-19v. Letter from Sarah, wife of J. C. Herries, to her father John Dorington, Boulogne, 1 May 1814, while accompanying her husband on his mission to negotiate with the allies in Paris, after Napoleon’s abdication; possibly the missing first letter in the series in Add. 71096, ff. 20-70v, see below.
5. ff. 20-70v. Letters from Sarah Herries to her mother Mrs S. Dorington, with one letter to her father John Dorington, Clerk of Fees at the House of Commons [1814]; the first letter from France is missing (see above); most were written during Sarah’s journey to Paris, Brussels and Amsterdam with her husband when the latter was engaged on financial business for Wellington’s Army [April - June 1814]. The letters describe ordinary and social life in France, the Herries’s visits to theatres, palaces, and museums, and their encounters with French, British and other royalty and nobility; May - June 1814. Three later letters describe visits to Brockwell [Yorkshire?], Keswick and Tunbridge Wells [15 Aug. 1814 - 4 Aug.1816?]. The Keswick letter [bef.
