HENRY MARTEN PAPERS. Vol. II (ff. ii+24). Henry Marten: Eleven tracts on political questions, with some verses in Latin, etc.; circa 1642-circa 1656, n.d. Mostly autograph drafts, and fragments. These tracts are apparently unpublished: for others see Add. 71534, below. Prefaced (f. ii) is a typewritten, signed letter of R. H. Hutchinson, Secretary of the English Books Company of Leeds, to the 12th Lord Fairfax, 31 March 1938, offering this manuscript for purchase. The contents are as follows::
1. ff. 5-6. 'The Rights of ye People of England considered . . . Published by Henry Marten of Berkshire Esqr dated [1642 deleted] 4 or 5 years ago . . . vpon occasion of certain collections set forth lately by Mr Selden & entituled ye Priviledges of ye Baronage of England when they sitt in Parliament'; 1647. Signed 'H M'.
2. ff. 9-10v. 'Observations of Henry Martens vpon Mr Whites grounds of Obedience & Government', with a prefatory letter to Thomas White, dated from the Rules [in Southwark], Aug. [16]55.' Imperfect, comprising 'Observations on ye first discourse touching Perfection of Governmt'.
3. ff. 11, 11v. Reply to a Scotsman, addressed merely as 'Jockey', on the Scots' reluctance to carry the captured Charles I into Scotland; circa but after 13 May 1646.
4. ff. 12-13v. 'An Answere to ye Author of ye Captious Questions'; n.d.
5. ff. 14, 14v. Tract defending the Levellers; n.d.
6. f. 15. 'The observations on Mr Haringtons commonwealth of Oceana reconsidered by H. Marten, & made vp in a letter to their Author'; 1656.
7. f. 16. 24 Latin hexameter verses hailing Cromwell as Protector, beg. 'Cedite (sic Anglum Parcæ voluere benignæ)'; circa 16 Dec. 1653. Autograph fair copy, with revisions.
8. f. 17. Titlepage only for 'ANTIKRESTISMOS or Satisfaction dis-satisfying. In seventeen answers to so many Queries calling themselves sober & serious . . . of J: G.'; n.d. circa 1654. This is an answer to J. Goodwin's Sunkretismos, or Dissatisfaction Satisfied (1654) [Thomason copy dated 22 Dec. 1653].
9. f. 18. 'History of Independency: reply to the second part of Clement Walker's book of that title, published in 1649; n.d., circa 1649.
10. f. 19. Remarks on the right of the people to choose their own representatives in the House of Commons; n.d.
