HENRY MARTEN PAPERS. Vol. IV (ff. i+187). 'Charles I. His Reign 1625-1649. Portraits of Statesmen and the Court. Together with State Documents'; 1641-circa 1844, n.d. The volume includes autograph drafts and fair copies of tracts by Henry Marten, along with petitions, orders, warrants, receipts, etc., partly in his hand or rel. to him, with some later transcripts of letters, etc. Other autograph tracts by Marten are preserved in Add. 71532, above. The volume heavily grangerised with contemporary and later printed materials, and in particular engraved portraits. Large folio. The contents comprise::
1. ff. 10-120 passim. Official and personal papers, with correspondence, of Henry Marten; 1641-1647, n.d. Items (a)-(g) are autograph. Viz::
a) ff. 10-11. 'A PLEA for the PEOPLE in answer To their late Adversary Mr Prynne'; n.d. Draft.
b) ff. 13, 13v. 'Certain Select Passages of Esqr Prynnes Plea for the Lords improved by Henry Marten'; circa 1648. Draft. On the verso is the draft of a satirical lyric on Prynne, beg. 'Tell me not what King [?Iua] did'.
c) ff. 15, 15v. 'Fundamentall rights belonging to ye English nation & declared by ye Commons in Parliament according to ye Law of ye Land'; n.d. Draft.
d) ff. 84-86. 'The mistakes of ye Petition calling it selfe ye Petition of ye Inhabitants of ye county of SUFFOLK Presented to ye House of Peers on ye 16th of Feb. 1646[/47] . . . As they were observed by T. S., a gentleman of ye same', that is, by Henry Marten. This is a reply to the petitioners' plea for the Presbyterian government of the Church. Draft.
e) ff. 89-90. 'A REPLY To ye answer without a name pretending animadversions vpon Mr CHALONER'S speech Published by [name omitted] groom to ye same Mr Challenor'; circa 1646. Fair copy, with revisions. Marten's tract, a reply to An Answer to the Scotch papers published by Thomas Chaloner M.P. in [October 1646], was printed anonymously as An Answer to a Speech without Doores . . . : Thomason acquired his copy (E.362(9)) on 16 November. The present version is shorter than the published one but includes (f.??v) an unpublished passage.
f) ff. 115-120. Projected answer of the House of Commons, apparently drafted by Marten, to the King's overtures for peace, comprised in a 'large discourse, in the King's behalfe and signed att the top by his owne hand' of 29 January 1645/6; March 1645/6. This reply includes a manifesto of the rights of the people and a rejection of the royal claim to sovereignty. Fair copy, with revisions.
g) f. 114. Memoranda by Marten of matters to be investigated at Reading and London; n.d. Fragment.
h) ff. 17, 60, 30, 33, 45, 55, 57, 114. Miscellaneous correspondence and personal papers of Marten; 1641-1643. Partly copies, and signed.
2. ff. 36-178 passim. Parliamentary papers; 1642-1648, n.d. Included are orders (ff. 49, 92, 97, 178), warrants and receipts for payments (ff. 36, 63-67, 71, 147, 150, 153), and petitions (ff. 38, 43, 78, 102), together with some printed items (ff. 158, 178).
