A. 'Instructions for Gilbt Gill Edward Cludd John Robinson Adam Eyre James Robinson Esqrs Richard Croxall Wm Marre & Wm: Maulton gent. Com[missioners] for the surveying the fforest of Sherwood Ffebr. 16th 1656.' The text is divided into 17 sections, only six of which correspond to any degree with the printed version at 71599 B. VCH Nottinghamshire I mentions the state of disorder obtaining in the forest during the Commonwealth, but makes no reference to a survey of this date. William Marr who is named as a Commissioner both in the MS and printed versions was a Parliamentary surveyor of Crown lands in 24 counties and Clerk to the Kitchen, temp. Charles II. (See P. Eden (editor), Dictionary of land surveyors and local cartographers of Great Britain and Ireland 1550 - 1850, 1975 - 1979, p. 174.) Edward Cludd is named as a Commissioner in the MS text only; he may be the probate judge of that name, connected with the Army Committee.
