TIPPETT COLLECTION (PART IV). Vol. xxvi. Sketches for the Concerto for piano and orchestra (1953-1955) and various other works; 1946-1978, n.d. Mainly pencil. The concerto was first performed at Birmingham Town Hall, 6 Oct. 1956. Pencil score at the Barber Institute for Fine Arts, Birmingham. Full score printed [1955?]; a copy with MS. annotations, some of them autograph, is at B.L. pressmark i.284. Two-piano reduction published 1957; study score published 1968.

1. ff. 1, 2-3, 5. 'The Heart's Assurance'; 1950-1951. Some sketches (ff. 3, 5) are possibly for an unused song or for a different work. Commissioned by Peter Pears and first performed at the Wigmore Hall, London, 7 May 1951. Published 1951. Pencil and ink scores at the Britten-Pears Library, Aldeburgh.
2. ff. 4, 5v, 8v. 'The Midsummer Marriage'; 1946-1952. Some sketches (f. 8v) possibly for an unidentified work. For pencil full score see Add. 53771, for one leaf of ink full score see Add. 61766.
3. f. 6. Arrangement of Henry Purcell, 'Fairest Isle' from King Arthur, possibly for the 'Masque of the Queens'; n.d. For related sketches see Add. 72027.
