TRUMBULL PAPERS. Vol. CCXII (ff. 100). Two tracts relating to French diplomacy; 1498-1585. Latin and French. Copies, in a single hand, circa late 16th-early 17th cent. French.
Paper: ff. 100. 325 x 210mm. Watermarks include one similar to C. M. Briquet, Les filigranes, ed. by Alan Stevenson, Amsterdam (1968), no. 678 (dated 1596, recorded with variants to 1624). Contemporary foliation from ff. 1-40. Formerly bound up with some Weckherlin items as Trumbull Misc. XLVIII/1. Contents as follows:
1. ff. 1-40v. Ogier Ghislain, Seigneur de Busbecq: 'Augerj Gisleni Busbequj Cæsaris apud Regem Gallorum Legati Epistolæ ad Rudolphum II. Imper: Ann. 1582 et Seqq. Parisijs Scriptæ', etc.; 1582-1585. Latin. The letters were first printed at Louvain in 1630.
2. ff. 41-100. 'Recueil faict par Monsr. Philippe Hanneton premièr secretaire et Auditeur du Roy de Castille etc des lettres, tiltres, memoires . . . traictes, Alliances . . . et exploicts, faicts . . . entre le Roy Loys de France xiie de ce nom . . . et ledit seigneur Roy de Castille, Archiduc dAustrie . . .'; 1498-1507. French. This collection, formed by the diplomat Philippe Haneton (d. 1529), comprises diplomatic correspondence, etc., of Louis XII of France with Ferdinand V of Spain. For a late 17th-cent. copy, which incorporates additional matter, see Additional MS 30689, ff. 170-251v.
