TRUMBULL PAPERS. Vol. CCXVIII (ff. i+234). Notarised register of lands owned by Vespasiano Gribaldi, alias Moffa, in Fruzascho, Piedmont; 1547-1549. Latin. The register comprises formal acknowledgements made by one hundred and eighty-five tenants of the monastery of the Blessed Virgin Mary at Fruzascho, etc., that they hold their land of Gribaldi. It was compiled in his absence by Vito Rostagni, notary public of Plozascho, and the bulk of the entries, which are copied in single hand, cover the period from 23 Feb. 1547 to 21 Mar. 1548, with later additions from 1 Sept. 1548 to 26 Feb. 1549. Gribaldi is described as bailiff of Cherio and perpetual commendatore of the bailiwick of the parish church of the monastery. His parentage is discussed in twenty-one laudatory elegiac couplets (ff. 5, 5v), in Latin, beg. 'Si quis ab heroico devenit corpore foelix' that are copied out in an italic script before the register. [From this it appears that he was the posthumous son of Giovanni Antonio Moffo, himself of Gribaldi blood, whose widow Valentia married the successful local lawyer through whom these properties descended to him. His precise relationship to the lawyer Maffeo Gribaldi, alias Moffa (d. 1564), who was born in Cherio, is unknown. Paper: ff. i+234. 326 x 223mm. Limp covers of rough calf, blind-stamped in panels with crescents and flowers, with four tie-holes at the outer edges. Paper unwatermarked except for small crown in final inserted quire of twelve leaves (ff. 222-233), bearing additional entries, sewn in towards end. Table of contents (ff. 2-4v) carried up to present f. 215v. Contemporary ink foliation (ff. 6-217), partly trimmed, from 1 to 211, with final four leaves (218-222) unfoliated. Autograph attestations by Rostagni at ff. 6 (signed), 215v and 233 also carry his notarial mark. Formerly Add. 3 (see label, f. i).
