TRUMBULL PAPERS. Vol. CCXIX (ff. ix+82). Formulary of documents relating to the French royal exchequer, etc.; 1443-after 1515, n.d. Copies,circa early 16th cent. Latin and French. The formulary, which begins with a list of five ordinances issued by Charles VII between 1443 and 1455, largely consists of copies of documents, in Latin and French, all but two, of 1510 and 1515, lacking dates, but including several from the reign of Francis I (1515-1547). It is preceded by a brief undated treatise in French concerning feudal land tenure in France, framed as a series of questions and answers.
Paper: ff. ix+82. 275 x 200mm. Binding of smooth brown calf blind-stamped with panels and ornaments, the spine cross-hatched between four raised bands: cp. similar vase and shield tools in French binding of 1518 illustrated in Elisabeth Baras et al., La Reliure Médiévale, Paris, 2nd edn. (1981), p.49, pl. 30. Four tie-holes at the outer edges of each cover, with remains of leather ties. Watermark of arms of Paris, similar to Briquet no. 2042 (type dated to circa 1485-1525). Text copied in a single hand which has added title 'Les tresoriers de France' on recto (f. v) of leaf later pasted to front cover. Other items, in French, pasted down inside covers comprise unidentified documents (iii, ix) and vellum strips (ff. iv, viii) from a charter, used for strengthening. 19th-cent. paper label (f. ii) on front cover inscribed in ink 'Old text hand –'. Formerly Add. 10 (see label, f. i).
