TRUMBULL PAPERS. Vol. CCXXV. 'THE NEGOTIATIONS OF THOMAS WOOLSEY CARDINALL OF YORKE'; 1522-1525. Copies, circa 2nd quarter of 17th cent. This collection of diplomatic documents relates to negotiations with Pope Leo X, the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, and others, to enlist support for a defensive and offensive alliance against France. The transcripts comprise diplomatic instructions and correspondence mostly between Wolsey and various ambassadors, 2 Sept. 1522-8 Sept. 1525, the individual documents being accompanied by short introductory comments. [The writers are John Clerk, Bishop of Bath and Wells, Richard Pace, Thomas Hannibal, Richard Sampson, later Bishop of Coventry and Lichfield, Sir Richard Jerningham, Brian Tuke, Cuthbert Tunstall and Sir Richard Wingfield, Sir Thomas Boleyn, William Knight, later Bishop of Bath and Wells, and Sir John Russell.] Included are two letters of Henry VIII, circa 8 Jan. 1517/8 and 8 Sept. 1525. Paper: ff. [200]. 298 x 195mm. Binding of smooth brown calf on boards, with blind-stamped panels on covers amd on spine five raised bands and remains of an 17th-18th centt. paper label inscribed in ink 'Card Woolsey's Negotiations'. Various watermarks include in the flyleaves a pot bearing the letters 'P DC'. Foredges stained red. Text, transcribed in a single variable hand, concludes 'transcript per H: P:'. A microfilm is in the Library of Congress (D182). Formerly Add. 1.
