TRUMBULL PAPERS. Vol. CCXXXI (ff. 32). Giovanni Ferrerio, of Piedmont: Collections on Scottish history and autobiographical notes; 377-1574. Latin. Apparently autograph. For details regarding Ferrerio's career see Ferrerii Historia Abbatum de Kynlos, ed. Alexander W. Leith (Edinburgh: Bannatyne Club, 1839), pp.[v]-viii, texts of which work, also thought to be autograph, are in Advocates Library MS 35.5.5B and Vatican Reg. Lat. MS ??? (Queen of Sweden). As follows:
1. ff. 1-24. 'Historiæ Compendium, de origine & incremento Gordoniæ familiæ in Scotia, Jo. ferrerio Pedemontano authore. [Apud Kynlos, 1545 deleted].' Latin. Fair-copy, with revisions, apparently autograph. The work itself (ff. 3-22v) is prefaced by an address (ff. 2, 2v) to George Gordon, 4th Earl of Huntly, dated from Kynlos, 30 Mar. 1545, and concludes with a letter (ff. 23, 23v) of Ferrerio to William Gordon, Bishop of Aberdeen, dated from Paris, 18 Oct. 1546. Advocates Library MS 35.5.5A and 34.6.18 are copies of this text, dating from 1613 and 1624.
Paper: ff. 24. Approx. 287 x 202mm. Single sewn gathering. Margins and text-lines ruled with drypoint. Contemporary pagination from 1 to 42, omitting letter at end. From Add. 2.
2. ff. 25-32. Collections on Scottish history, with some autobiographical notes, etc.; 377-1574. Latin. Apparently autograph. These notes, written mostly on disjunct leaves, comprise: (i) list of the Kings of Scotland, 377-1574, headed 'Scotorum Reges. ex Theatro', taken from Abraham Ortelius's Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (1570). ff. 25, 25v; (ii) notes on the family of Douglas, 1513-1564. f. 26; (iii) account of Ferrerio's life to circa 1554, interspersed with notes of European political events. ff. 27-29v; and (iv) calendar, arranged by day and month, of events in the lives of famous Scotsmen and women, 1513-1574, including autobiographical notes of Ferrerius, with heading in red ink 'Ex Calendario nostro' ff. 30v-32.
