TRUMBULL PAPERS. Vol. CCXXXII (ff. 16). John Leslie al. Lesley, Bishop of Ross: Two tracts, partly autobiographical; circa 1569-1579. Latin and French. Copies. As follows:
1. ff. 1-12. Tract on the necessity for ambassadors; circa 1568-1573. French. Copy. This tract is addressed (f. 1) to Queen Elizabeth I, to whom Lesley was acting as ambassador from Mary, Queen of Scots.
Paper: ff. 12. 313 x 212mm. Sewn gathering. Watermark of pot bearing letters 'NV', similar to Briquet no. 12781 (dated 1573). From Add. 15.
2. ff. 13-16. Account of his travels in Germany and France; 1578-1579. Latin. Copy. The purpose of Lesley's journey, undertaken at the behest of Pope Gregory XIII, was to visit various Catholic princes and recover former Scots abbeys in Germany.
Paper: ff. 4. 308 x 215mm. Watermark of crowned shield with intertwined letters 'CD' and compartment, similar to Briquet no. 9335 (dated 1578). Docketed (f. 16v) in another contemporary hand 'Discursus itineris Episcopi Roffensis per Germaniam.'. From Add. 2.
