TRUMBULL PAPERS. Vol. CCXXXIII (ff. 22). 'An answer to the objections made by Iohn Houson \ doctor in diuinity / against the lawfulness of second mariages after diuorce for fornication, the parties diuorced liuing'; 2 Sept. 1602. This anonymous tract was composed to refute the third of three Latin theses defended by Howson, later Bishop of Durham, at Oxford on 10 July 1602, on the topic 'Uxore dimissa propter fornicationem aliam non licet superinducere', two printed issues of which appeared in that year. It comprises a translation into English of Howson's thesis, disposed in ninety-one numbered paragraphs each followed by a counter-argument, and concludes with a brief 'Corollarium'. This work predates Thomas Pie's Epistola ad . . . Johannem Housonum qua dogma eius . . . refutatur (1603) which was completed on 31 Dec 1602.
Paper: ff. 22. 308 x 204mm. Sewn gathering, with contemporary pagination from 1 to 37. Watermark of pot with letters 'I B'. Formerly Add. 19(7).
