TRUMBULL PAPERS. Vol. CCLVIII (ff. 179).
1. ff. 1-32. Correspondence of Trumbull with Alexander Pope, and related papers; 1705-1730. Trumbull's letters are drafts or abstracts. Mostly printed by George Sherburn in Review of English Studies, N.S., IX (1958), pp. 388-406; but note that the draft of Trumbull's letter of 6 March 1714 present here on the bottom of a letter from Nicolas Fountaine to Trumbull (f. 18), is considerably fuller than the version printed in The Correspondence of Alexander Pope, ed. G. Sherburn (Oxford, 1956), I, p. 212. Including (f. 8) a joint letter from Pope and Charles Jervas in the latter's hand and (ff. 23-26) a photocopy of a letter of 14 Feb. 1715 from Pope to Trumbull in the Temple MSS at Harvard University, presented by Sherburn while the collection was at the Berkshire Record Office. Followed (ff. 29-32) by a letter from Pope to [Elijah Fenton?], [Sept. 1724?], a copy of his letter to William Broome, 4 Dec. 1724, an extract from a letter of Edward Harley, 2nd Earl of Oxford, to Pope, 22 April 1726, and a copy of a monumental inscription by Pope, the last three all referring to Elijah Fenton and printed in Correspondence, ed. Sherburn II, pp. 273-274, 376, III, p. 156). One further letter from Pope to Anthony Englefield of 8 Aug. 1707, originally in this collection and printed by Sherburn, was sold separately by Sotheby's to Maggs, 14 Dec. 1989. Chiefly from Add. 139, except for Pope's letter of 19 Dec. 1713 (from Misc. XLIV) and Trumbull's drafts of April 1708 (from Misc. LI) and 6 March 1714 (from Misc. LIX). For a letter from Trumbull to Pope, 1706, see Add. 4807, f. 169v.
2. ff. 33-178. Correspondence of Trumbull with Henry St John, afterwards Viscount Bolingbroke; 1698-1710. Including (f. 115) one letter from his wife, Frances, [1702?], and some drafts of Trumbull's letters. From Misc. XXXII, XXXIII, XLVI, LI and Add. 133. Many of the letters, 1698-1705, are printed in H.M.C. Downshire, I, pt. ii; some others are quoted in H. T. Dickinson, Bolingbroke (1970), pp. 8-49 passim.
