TRUMBULL PAPERS. Vol. CCCXIV. Narrative by Trumbull concerning his embassy in Constantinople; 1688-1689. Autograph fair copy. Incomplete; wanting at least one quire at the beginning, which presumably covered the events of 1687 and early part of 1688, and possibly also wanting further sections at the end (f. beg. with the chapter heading 'Anno 1689' but no further year headings occur). The narrative as it exists at present begins in mid-sentence, 'Right Hand (att some distance) sitt ye other Vizirs ...', an account of the paying of the janissaries, and continues with much detail about Turkish affairs and Trumbull's relations with other ambassadors and residents. It is, however, a different work from Add. 34799, 'Memorials of my Embassy in Constantinople', an autograph narrative with some additions and corrections, covering the first two years of Trumbull's embassy in some detail and the part of the remainder in the form of rough notes. For diplomatic journals by Trumbull at this period, see Add. 52279, 52280 (Sotheby's, 30 July 1963, lots 594, 596; see also lot 571 for another by a member of his staff). Formerly Add. 99. For the use of Trumbull's Turkish papers by Sir Paul Rycaut in his Turkish History, see Sonia P. Anderson, An English Consul at Smyrna (Oxford, 1989), p. 282.
ff. . Originally in three unbound quires, with part of a former (18th cent.?) wrapper, labelled 'Sir Wm. Trumbull's narrative of Events during his residence in Constantinople circa 1688'. 390 x 265mm.
