L Letter from William Wyndham, Baron Grenville, statesman: as Foreign Secretary to the Prime Minister, William Pitt the Younger; 1 Aug. 1799. Arguing in favour of the planned forthcoming Allied invasion of the Netherlands; quoted in part in Piers Mackesy, The Strategy of Overthrow, 1798-1799 (1974), p. 165; Pitt's reply is in the Dropmore Papers (Add. MS 58907, ff. 214 - 217v; 2 Aug. 1799 ) and printed in the HMC Report on the Fortescue Papers, vol. V, pp. 224-225; with the envelope (f. 3) in which it was preserved until recently, and a transcript. Contemporary copy of Grenville's draft, not in his hand, nor in that of Thomas Grenville, as claimed on f. 50; the version sent to Pitt is PRO30/8/140. Presented by Dr Charles T.
