A. Privy Council letter to Nathaniel Bacon of Stiffkey as Collector for the County of Norfolk, deferring until 20 or 31 October next outstanding payments due from the loan levied by Elizabeth I on the previous 22 Feb.; Greenwich, 16 Aug. 1597. Scribal fair copy with revisions. Signed by Lords Burghley, Hunsdon and North, Sir William Knollys, Charles, Baron Howard, and Robert Cecil (later Earls of Banbury, Nottingham and Salisbury respectively) and (Sir) John Fortescue. Cf. P.R.O., Acts of the Privy Council, 1596-1597, pp. 459-460, and 1597, pp. 346-348 (dated 17 Aug.). Purchased in 1973 from Goodspeed's Book Shop, Boston, U.S.A., by her colleagues at Barnard College and Columbia University to mark the retirement of Dr Eleanor Rosenberg (d. 1998) who bequeathed it to the Library in memory of her years of research in the collections, 6 Jan. 1999.
Paper; ff. 1-2v. 320 x 218mm. Modern item-number '96' pencilled at the head of the first, with '125' and 'Q' at the (repaired) foot of the second page.
