P. Mary Powell: Petition on her behalf addressed to the Committee for the Advance of Money at Haberdashers' Hall; n.d. [circa May 1643-May 1651]. Fair copy with revisions. The petitioner, a daughter of the merchant Sir Peter Vanlore (d.1627), was wife of Sir Edward Powell of Pengethly, Bart. She seeks relief from the fine of three hundred pounds at which she had been assessed on 8 May previously, having, since being deserted by her husband, subsisted without any income of her own in his house in Chelsea. Her provision of horses and quarter for the Parliamentary troop (disbanded in April 1645) of the Earl of Manchester has earned her the nickname of 'the Round-headed Lady'. The administration of her estate is dated 15 Jan. 1652, but for a later dispute concerning a fine see Commons Journals, VIII, 83 (7 July 1660) and Add. 36115, ff. 1-9 (17 July 1661). Purchased from A. R. Heath of Clifton, Bristol, March 1999.
Paper; f. 69. 280 x 196mm. On the verso (f. 1v) are jotted, in different hands, the docket 'No 20 [deleted] (33)', the name 'Lilburne' and the date '1605'.
