S. William Pulteney, Earl of Bath: Ode 'Imitated from ye 11th Ode book 2nd of Horace'; circa 1745. Scribal copy. The attribution to Pulteney of this eleven-stanza poem addressed by 'Paul Foley' to 'Faz', that is Nicholas Fazakerley, M.P. (1685?-1767), and beg. 'Never dear Faz torment thy brain', is owed to Horace Walpole. The text includes occasional variants from and expands the initials of names in that separately published in 1745 (Foxon, English Verse, P1166) and that found among the Collection of poems, principally consisting of pieces of Sir Charles Hanbury Williams, 1763. Purchased from A. R. Heath of Clifton, Bristol, June 1999.
